Solar Panels, Solar Cells, and Solar PV

Solar PanelsAs most people have probably noticed by now, energy costs are on the rise. All one has to do is look at their monthly utility bill to understand that electricity rates are only going up, and there is little indication that this trend will reverse itself anytime soon. To combat these rising prices, many homeowners are turning to alternative energy sources such as solar, and with great effect. However, purchasing solar panels and the like can be a costly endeavor, putting these systems out of reach of many people. Fortunately, with the right tools and equipment, one can actually make your own solar panels for much less money than it would take to purchase them.

At HowToBuildASolarPanel.org, we are strong proponents of the do-it-yourself method of becoming energy independent. And because the solar cells and other necessary components can usually be purchased locally and inexpensively, there is no reason not to go the DIY route. To this end, we have designed and built our website for those that are interested in trying their hand at homemade solar PV and are looking for the latest available information. We do not formally endorse any particular company or manufacturer, nor do we sell any product ourselves, and as a result we are free to offer content that is honest and non-biased. Out site is strictly for informational purposes only, and we do our best to keep it as updated as possible.

The first step towards building your own solar panels is to understand what components, equipment, and tools will be needed to ensure your project is a success. There are two primary resources from which such information can be gained; your local bookstore, or the Internet. A well written book can often be the best way to learn about building these systems, as they usually go into much more detail than would a simple plan set. They also commonly contain a step-by-step process complete with detailed pictures and explanations. Most major bookstores will have at least one or two such books on their shelves, or can order them fairly easily.

If, however, you do not have access to such a bookstore, or if your local bookstore cannot get you what you need, the Internet can be a great alternative. There are dozens of websites available that can provide you with detailed plan sets, and in some cases, they can even provide you with the materials you will need to get started. It should be noted that there are a variety of methods for creating solar PV systems, and as such it is important to investigate a number of options before settling on one that is best suited to your situation and abilities.

There are many other aspects of DIY solar panels that are necessary to build a successful system. If you need any further information regarding any of these issues, please feel free to browse through the various links we have provided on this page. Each link contains detailed information regarding a specific aspect of building these systems.
