If you have the time, energy, and skills, it is possible to make solar panels at home. Of course, the primary advantage of doing so is economic, as it is much less expensive to build your own panels than to purchase them from a vendor. However, DIY panels are often not as efficient or as effective as those you can buy new.

It is generally much easier to make solar panels for water heating purposes than it is for generating electricity. For the most part, these panels can be made from materials that you can commonly find at a local hardware store, or even a junkyard. There are numerous sources for plan sets that are available over the Internet, or through books you can find at a local bookstore.

In order to make solar panels of the purpose of generating electricity, the construction process is a bit more intensive. First, one has to find the appropriate materials, such as silicon solar cells, wiring, and solder. Secondly, one must have a basic understanding of how electricity works and the ability to wire all of the cells together into a cohesive unit.
